I spent years being the one everybody counts on.
I was good at it. Great job, great numbers, everyone's emergency contact. What I wasn't good at was taking care of myself. I made everyone else the priority over me for so long that I lost my mind, body, heart and soul along the way.
Then I lost both of my jobs within seven months.
Before that I'd already dug myself out of $74,000 of debt in three years, no finance degree, no secret salary. Somewhere in there I also got obsessive about my health, tracked 1,300 nights of sleep, and finally learned how to sleep properly and take care of my body. It's not just about the sleep. It's about taking care of your entire self: mind, body, heart, and soul. Without one of those pieces it cannot work. It all has to operate together.
I've gotten all of it back. Not overnight, and not gracefully, but I did.
Now I travel as much as I can, mostly alone, and I write down exactly how I did each thing so somebody else doesn't have to figure it out from scratch. I'm not a guru and I'm nowhere near finished. I'm just a bit further down the road on a few specific things, and I'll tell you the truth about all of them.
